HIKING, GAME VIEWING, BIRDING Much of the 818-ha Lawrence de Lange Nature Reserve s taken up by Madeira Mountain, a step and stony but well-grassed area, taller vegetation is concentrated in its ravines, plains zebra, black wildebeest, gemsbok, red hartebeest, springbok, eland kudu, impala and blesbok have been introduced in the reserve, and to date 35 mammal species have been recorded. A number of bird species may also be seen. A second, 475 ha nature reserve called Loghill has recently been proclaimed and lies across the road from Lawrence de Lange Nature Reserve. Further information can be obtained from the same address. Location: Just outside Queenstown. Access: At the traffic light at the Royal Hotel in Queenstown, turn north into Robinson Road and then left into Kingsway; follow this into Hangklip Road. This leads to the gates of the Lawrence de Lange Nature Reserve, approximately 3 km from where the gravel road starts. Accommodation: None. Camping for overnight hikers allowed. Other facilities: 3 hiking trails (maximum 12 people per trail), including a guided overnight trail (school groups must be accompanied by a teacher); a short network of game-viewing roads; picnic sites. Early booking for the trails is advised. There are 2 hiking trails and picnic sites with fireplaces in the Loghill area. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: 08h00 to 17h00; October through April weekends - 07h00 to 19h00.
